LONDON (AP) – Britain suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong on Monday and blocked arms sales to the former British territory after China imposed a tough new national security law.

Amid growing tensions with Beijing, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the House of Commons that he had concerns about the new law and alleged human rights abuses in China, particularly the treatment of the Uighur minority. He described the measures announced Monday as “reasonable and proportionate.″

“We will protect our vital interests,″ Raab said. “We will stand up for our values and we will hold China to its international obligations.″

Britain followed the example of the United States, Australia and Canada by suspending extradition agreements with Hong Kong, which became a special administrative region of China after the U.K. returned control of the territory to Beijing in 1997.

Events in Hong Kong are particularly sensitive for the British government because China agreed to a “one country, two systems″ policy that was supposed to protect the economic and social traditions of the territory for 50 years after the handover.

Britain and other western nations believe the new security law threatens that agreement because it restricts free speech and erodes the judicial independence of Hong Kong. The law makes crimes such as promoting secession punishable by life in prison and allows some cases to be tried on the mainland.

This means people extradited to Hong Kong could end up being tried in mainland courts, Raab said.

The U.K. previously accused the Beijing government of a serious breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration under which Hong Kong was returned to China and announced it would open a special route to citizenship for up to 3 million eligible residents of the territory.

China’s decision to implement the security law on June 30 triggered widespread protests in Hong Kong. Police responded with water cannon, tear gas and hundreds of arrests.

The ban on arms sales extends an embargo that has been in place for mainland China since 1989. It means the government will not allow British companies to export potentially lethal weapons, their components or ammunition, as well as equipment that might be used for internal repression such as shackles, firearms and smoke grenades.

The measures announced Monday come less than a week after Britain backtracked on plans to give Chinese telecommunications company Huawei a role in the U.K.’s new high-speed mobile phone network.

The U.S. has lobbied its allies to shun Huawei because it says the Chinese government could use the company’s technology to spy on western nations. Huawei denies the allegations.

Beijing objected to the new measures even before they were formally announced by Raab.

China’s ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, on Sunday told the BBC that Britain was “dancing to the tune” of the U.S. and rejected the allegations of human rights abuses against the mainly-Muslim Uighur people.

He accused Western countries of trying to foment trouble with China.

“People say China (is) becoming very aggressive. That’s totally wrong,” he said. “China has not changed. It’s Western countries, headed by United States – they started this so-called new Cold War on China.”

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s government will demand people wear face coverings in shops as it seeks to clarify its message after weeks of prevarication amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to tell the House of Commons on Tuesday that anyone failing to comply with the order could face a fine of up to 100 pounds ($125). The order comes into effect on July 24, giving shops and the police time to prepare.

Many European nations, including Germany, Spain, Italy and Greece, already require masks to be worn in enclosed spaces.

Britain, which has reported one of the world’s highest numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths, had taken a more relaxed attitude, recommending masks but not requiring them — at least until now.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who in the spring spent a week in the hospital being treated for COVID-19, had not been seen in public in a mask until last week. On Monday morning, he urged people to wear them. Monday evening, his government announced it would be compulsory.

The authorities are hoping the public will simply comply. London Mayor Sadiq Khan told the BBC he believed that “Londoners by and large will follow the rules,” without too much need for the police.

“The problem is not the issue of enforcement, the problem is the mixed messages and the confused communications,” Khan said.

Environment Secretary George Eustice also did not rule out the possibility that mandatory face coverings would become compulsory in offices and other workplaces in the future. He told the BBC on Tuesday that the government was taking “one step at a time and we’ve taken the view in this next step that we should make it mandatory in retail environments.”

The new requirement only applies to in England. Scotland has already made masks mandatory in stores.

A growing body of evidence suggests wearing face coverings brings some benefit in preventing the spread of the virus.

Wednesday, July 1, 2020

LONDON (AP) – Britain announced Wednesday that it was extending residency rights for up to 3 million Hong Kongers eligible for the British National Overseas passport, stressing that it would uphold its historic duty to the former British colony after Beijing imposed a sweeping new national security law in the city.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told lawmakers that amid widespread concerns about Beijing’s tightening grip on Hong Kong, the U.K. was changing its immigration rules to give people who are connected to Britain by virtue of the city’s status as a former British colony a special route to citizenship.

Eligible individuals from Hong Kong currently can come to the U.K. for six months without a visa. Under the new policy, they will have the right to live and work in the country for five years. After that, they will be allowed to apply for settled status and then again for citizenship.

Hong Kongers who were born after the end of British rule in 1997 are not eligible, meaning that in effect, many of the city’s young student activists who are most at risk of arrest under the new law cannot take advantage of the British offer.

The announcement came hours after China imposed a sweeping new national security law in Hong Kong that Britain calls a flagrant breach of China’s international obligations and a “clear and serious violation” of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

That treaty paved the way for Hong Kong’s handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997, and was supposed to guarantee at least 50 years of Western-style rule of law and civil liberties for the city under a “One Country, Two Systems” principle until 2047.

Chinese officials have in the past referred to the document as a “historical document,” a claim that Britain strongly rejects.

“The prime minister and the government are crystal clear that the United Kingdom will keep its word,” Raab said. “We will live up to our responsibilities to the people of Hong Kong.”

The U.K. introduced a special, limited type of British nationality in the 1980s for people who were a “British dependent territories citizen by connection with Hong Kong.” The passports did not confer nationality or the automatic right to live and work in Britain, but entitled holders to consular assistance from U.K. diplomatic posts.

Britain’s government estimates there are about 350,000 current holders of the British National Overseas passports, with a total of around 2.9 million people eligible for it. It says the extended residency rules will apply to all of them and their immediate dependents.

No exact date was given for the new rule’s implementation, and Raab said further details will be announced later.

Raab called the security law a “grave and deeply disturbing step,” and said it contained measures that directly threaten the judicial independence and freedoms of speech and protest protected by the Joint Declaration. It was particularly concerning that mainland Chinese authorities can now take jurisdiction over some cases without independent oversight, and try those cases in Chinese courts, he said.

Trust in China’s ability to live up to its international responsibilities took “a big step backwards,” he added.

The security law makes secessionist, subversive, terrorist activities and foreign intervention in Hong Kong’s affairs illegal. The most serious offenders, such as those deemed to be masterminds behind the crimes, could receive a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Many critics in the city and abroad say the law effectively ends “One Country, Two Systems” policy and erases the legal firewall between Hong Kong and the mainland’s Communist Party rule.

Hong Kong police arrested nine people under the law Wednesday, the first day it came into effect. They included a man with a Hong Kong independence flag and a woman holding a sign displaying the British flag and calling for Hong Kong’s independence. Others were detained for possessing items advocating independence.

Associated Press

Wednesday, July 1, 2020

JERUSALEM (AP) – A confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the Israeli leader’s plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank would not start on Wednesday, the original target date, as the British prime minister made an extraordinary appeal to Israel to call off the plan.

The developments cast further uncertainty over whether Israel will ultimately follow through on the explosive annexation initiative, which has drawn fierce international condemnations from some of Israel’s closest allies.

Speaking on Israel’s Army Radio station, Cabinet minister Ofir Akunis confirmed that the annexation process would not begin on Wednesday, saying that officials were still working out the final details with their American counterparts. He said he expected the annexation to take place later in July.

“Coordination with the American administration is not something that can be dismissed,” he said.

Netanyahu had aimed to start the process by Wednesday, saying he wants to begin annexing West Bank territory in line with President Donald Trump’s Mideast plan.

The Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement saying Netanyahu held discussions Wednesday with American diplomats and Israeli defense officials on the issue of annexation, and that “additional discussions will be be held in the coming days.”

The plan, unveiled in January, envisions bringing some 30% of the territory under permanent Israeli control, while giving the Palestinians limited autonomy in carved-up pockets of the remaining land.

But the plan has come under stiff international criticism. The United Nations, the European Union and key Arab countries have all said Israel’s annexation would violate international law and undermine the already diminished prospects of establishing a viable independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Even close allies, like Britain, have opposed it.

In a front-page article in the Yediot Ahronot daily, one of Israel’s largest newspapers, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote that as a “passionate defender of Israel,” he was particularly troubled by its intentions. He noted his long links to Israel, dating back to when volunteered on a kibbutz as an 18-year-old and his “many visits” since then.

“As a life-long friend, admirer and supporter of Israel, I am fearful that these proposals will fail in their objective of securing Israel’s borders and will be contrary to Israel’s own long-term interests,” Johnson wrote, adding that annexation “would put in jeopardy” the gains Israel has made in recent years in improving relations with the Arab world.

“I profoundly hope that annexation does not go ahead. If it does, the UK will not recognize any changes to the 1967 lines, except those agreed between both parties,” he said.

Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. The international community considers the territory occupied land, and Israel’s more than 120 settlements there illegal. The Palestinians, who seek all of the West Bank as part of a future state, have rejected the Trump plan.

Several thousand Palestinians marched in Gaza City for a “day of rage” on Wednesday to protest the annexation plans, one of several demonstrations that were expected in Palestinian areas. The protesters waved Palestinian flags and held signs calling the plan a “declaration of war” on the Palestinian people. The rally ended peacefully by the early afternoon.

While building scores of settlements that are now home to nearly 500,000 Israelis, Israel has never tried to annex West Bank territory before, saying the area is “disputed” and that its final status should be settled through negotiations. The international community considers the area occupied and its settlements to be illegal.

Netanyahu has defended his annexation plan on both security and religious grounds and says the friendly Trump administration has provided a rare opportunity to redraw Israel’s borders. He is eager to move forward before November’s U.S. presidential election, especially with Trump’s re-election prospects in question, and made sure that the coalition agreement for his new government included the July 1 date for him to introduce a plan to parliament.

But beyond the international opposition, Netanyahu has encountered some resistance from his Blue and White governing partners. Blue and White’s leader, Defense Minister Benny Gantz, this week said Wednesday’s target date was not “sacred” and suggested that annexation can wait while the government grapples with Israel’s coronavirus crisis.

U.S. officials have said they do not want to move forward with a plan unless the two leaders are in agreement. Israeli media also reported that Israel is seeking changes in a proposed U.S. map for annexation, and that American officials are demanding an Israeli gesture to the Palestinians as compensation for any annexation that takes place.

Dovish Israeli groups have been holding street protests against the annexation plan and it has also encountered surprising opposition from some of the West Bank settlers themselves, who fear having to recognize a de facto Palestinian state and find themselves engulfed in isolated enclaves.

The majority of them, however, are pressuring Netanyahu to follow through, launching a campaign titled, “you made a promise – keep it.”

Tuesday, June 16, 2020

LONDON (AP) – Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Tuesday that he is merging the British government’s international development department into its foreign ministry to create a “super department” in charge of both diplomacy and aid. The move was criticized by three of Johnson’s predecessors as prime minister.

Johnson told lawmakers that the Department for International Development will combined with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office into the new Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

He said the combined department would “magnify” Britain’s voice on the world stage while linking development aid to Britain’s values and goals.

Critics argued that the move would dilute Britain’s role in international development. But Johnson said many other countries, including Canada, New Zealand and Australia, already deliver aid through their foreign ministries.

He said the U.K. would continue to to meet the United Nations’ target of spending 0.7% of Gross National Income on foreign aid.

“This is exactly the moment when we must mobilize every one of our national assets, including our aid budget and expertise, to safeguard British interests and values overseas – and the best possible instrument for doing that will be a new department charged with using all the tools of British influence to seize the opportunities ahead,” Johnson said.

Aid groups responded to the announcement with alarm. Danny Sriskandarajah, chief executive of Oxfam GB, said that with the coronavirus pandemic threatening to push half a billion people around the world into poverty, “the U.K. should be stepping up to protect lives but is instead choosing to step back.”

Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said the government shakeup was “the tactics of pure distraction,” intended to deflect attention from the Conservative government’s mishandling of COVID-19. Britain’s reported COVID-19 death toll of more than 41,800 as of Tuesday is the third-highest in the world, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

Starmer said that abolishing the development department “diminishes Britain’s place in the world.”

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose Labour government established the international development department in 1997, said he was “utterly dismayed by the decision.”

“The strategic aims of alignment with diplomacy and focus on new areas of strategic interest to Britain could be accomplished without its abolition. Wrong and regressive move,” Blair said.

Blair’s successor as prime minister, Gordon Brown, tweeted that the department “has lifted millions of people out of poverty, saved millions of lives, and helped millions more children go to school. It’s sad the government is abolishing one of the UK’s great international assets.”

Johnson’s announcement also earned a rare rebuke from a previous Conservative prime minister, David Cameron.

Cameron tweeted that abolishing the development department was a “mistake” that would mean “less expertise, less voice for development at the top table and ultimately less respect for the UK overseas.”

Associated Press

Friday, June 12, 2020

LONDON (AP) – The British government said Friday it will delay bringing in full border checks on goods coming from the European Union to relieve pressure on businesses hammered by the coronavirus pandemic. But the U.K. once again ruled out delaying its full economic break with the bloc beyond the end of this year.

The U.K. left the now-27-nation bloc on Jan. 31, but remains part of its single market for trade and other economic structures during a transition period that lasts until Dec. 31. After that, British firms trading with the EU will face customs checks, border inspections and – unless there is a free trade deal – tariffs.

The bloc is the U.K.’s biggest economic partner, accounting for about half of Britain’s trade. In February the U.K. government announced that goods coming from the EU would require inspections and customs declarations starting in January.

But on Friday the government said border checks would be introduced in stages. Importers of most goods will be able to delay submitting customs declarations or paying tariffs for up to six months, though they will have to keep customs records. From July 2021, traders will have to make full declarations and pay tariffs at the point of importation.

The government estimates that businesses will have to fill out 200 million new customs forms a year under the new rules.

The government also announced 50 million pounds ($63 million) to help set up a huge new border industry to deal with trade red tape, including customs brokers and freight forwarders. The U.K. says it will build new customs and border facilities for all the checks – a process that has been set back by the pandemic.

Britain’s economy is already reeling from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The Office for National Statistics said Friday that economic activity shrank by 20.4% in April, the first full month after a nationwide lockdown was introduced to slow the spread of the virus.

All areas of the economy were hit during the month, in particular pubs, education, health and car sales. The month-on-month decline was unprecedented and, adding the still substantial 5.8% decline in March, means the U.K. economy is around 25% smaller than it was in February.

The U.K. and the bloc are trying to negotiate a free trade deal to kick in after that, but talks have stalled amid wide differences over key issues, from fishing rights to competition rules.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to hold talks with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and other top officials of the bloc by video call on Monday in a bid to break the impasse in trade talks.

Britain has firmly ruled out seeking an extension to the transition period, which was permitted under a U.K.-EU divorce agreement, raising the prospect of a “no-deal exit that many British businesses say could be devastating.

EU commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic said Britain’s Michael Gove, the minister in charge of Brexit preparations ‘’could not be clearer” there would not be an extension although the EU was ready to grant one. Sefcovic and Gove co-chaired an EU-U.K. joint committee meeting on Friday.

“He explained that this was the promise which was given to the British citizens in the electoral campaign, and also Prime Minister (Boris) Johnson was very explicit on this issue,” Sefcovic said.

Gove said: “We have informed the EU today that we will not extend the transition period.”

Opposition politicians in Britain condemned the government’s refusal to seek an extension. The leaders of Scotland and Wales, Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford, said in a letter to Johnson that “exiting the transition period at the end of the year would be extraordinarily reckless.”

Speaking during a press conference, Sefcovic said some positive results were achieved during Friday’s meeting but insisted there was still lots of work to do.

Asked about the border checks, Sefcovic said the EU is determined to protect its single market, customs union and financial interests.

He said Britain had yet to provide details about how it would implement an agreement between the two sides to ensure that the border between EU member Ireland and the U.K’s Northern Ireland was kept free of customs posts and other barriers.

The agreement effectively keeps Northern Ireland inside the EU’s customs territory and will require some checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K. – a politically sensitive issue that the British government is reluctant to discuss.

“We need to move from aspiration to operation and fast,” Sefcovic said.

LONDON (AP) – A vaccine summit hosted by Britain on Thursday raised billions of dollars to immunize children in developing countries as experts wrestled with the difficult question of how any potential vaccine against the new coronavirus might be distributed globally – and fairly.

The United Nations and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have urged that “a people’s vaccine” be developed for COVID-19 that would be freely available to everyone, calling it a “moral imperative.”

Thursday’s event raised $8.8 billion, exceeding its target, for the vaccines alliance GAVI, which says the funds will be used to vaccinate about 300 million children in dozens of countries against diseases like malaria, pneumonia and HPV.

GAVI also announced a new “advance market commitment” mechanism to enable developing countries to get any effective COVID-19 vaccine when available. It hopes to raise an additional $2 billion for that effort, to immunize health care workers as well as high-risk individuals and create a buffer of doses to be used where needed most.

But experts pointed out that the unprecedented pandemic – where arguably every country will be clamoring for a vaccine – may make efforts at fair distribution extremely messy.

The worldwide scramble for masks and ventilators that erupted in the early stages of the outbreak – where France took over the country’s mask stocks so they could be given to first responders and others inside the country and the U.S. apparently paid off shippers to redirect ventilators to the U.S. – are not encouraging signs that there will be much global cooperation if and when a coronavirus vaccine is available.

“Rich countries will most likely try to push their way to the front of the queue, leaving poorer countries at the back, and that’s a problem,” said Jimmy Whitworth, a professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

“I can’t imagine any country saying, ‘Africa’s need is greater than ours, so they can get the vaccine first and we’ll remain vulnerable.’”

The urgency of finding a way to stem outbreaks was evident as the worldwide total of reported virus cases reached 130,398 on Wednesday, the highest one-day total so far in the pandemic, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Brazil reported yet another record number of deaths – 1,349 – bringing Brazil’s confirmed death toll to more than 32,500, the world’s fourth-highest and considered by experts a significant under count due to insufficient testing.

India reported a record number of infections – 9,304, with 260 deaths – as its tally of fatalities surpassed 6,000 and its number of infections rose to nearly 217,000, the world’s seventh-highest. Neighboring Pakistan reported over 4,000 new cases as its confirmed infections surpassed neighboring China – a spike that came weeks after Prime Minister Imran Khan overrode warnings from experts and eased a lockdown.

Ahead of the vaccine gathering, philanthropist Bill Gates said there were potential solutions to the growing tide of vaccine nationalism – exhibited when the CEO of Sanofi suggested the U.S. had a right to the first doses of any vaccine because of its significant investment.

“The key to that challenge is having scale and having factories all over the world that are making the vaccines,” including multiple factories in Asia, the Americas and Europe, Gates said.

Gates acknowledged there could be some benefit to countries that funded vital vaccine research but called for a “system of allocating doses to those most at risk, and making sure that even the countries that can’t compete financially for that access, that they’re considered – their health workers, their elderly.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he hoped Thursday’s gathering would mark “the moment when the world comes together to unite humanity in the fight against disease.”

But Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, noted that in the past such sentiments have not always been backed by action. “In reality, that can be turned on its head in the weeks and months ahead,” he said.

About a dozen vaccine candidates are in early stages of testing in thousands of people around the world. There are no guarantees any will work but there’s increasing hope that at least some could be ready by the end of the year. Oxford University is beginning an advanced study involving 10,000 volunteers; the U.S. is preparing for even larger studies in July that involve 30,000 people each testing different candidates, including Oxford’s and one made by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc.

Vaccine developers are worried about whether the virus spread is slowing enough in the U.S. and Europe that it will be hard to prove if their candidates really work. So later this month, the Oxford vaccine will be tested on 2,000 Brazilian volunteers in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, according to the U.K. ambassador to Brazil, Vijay Rangarajan. The U.S. government also is considering test sites in other countries.

While Oxford scientists say they are committed to making their shot available to all who need it at a fair price, academic Whitworth noted “that doesn’t square with the rhetoric coming from British ministers funding it, saying U.K. citizens will be at the front of the queue.”

And the U.S. has signed a contract with AstraZeneca, which makes the Oxford vaccine, for 300 million doses.

Vaccine makers know they’ll be judged if rich countries buy up all their supply. Thursday, AstraZeneca said it would provide 300 million doses of the Oxford vaccine to GAVI’s new financing mechanism to try to ensure equitable access. The doses will be provided when the vaccine is licensed or pre-qualified by the World Health Organization.

“I’m thinking very carefully what would be the best way to make sure that everybody will get a fair share of the supplies that exist as quickly as possible and that in this fairness we will not forget the unprivileged countries,” said Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. “From the human perspective they have equal rights.”

In the U.S., where a wave of protests is adding to concerns over possible additional outbreaks, new cases have been surging just weeks after many businesses were allowed to reopen. On Thursday, Vegas casinos and Universal Orlando were among those welcoming visitors.

As of Thursday, more than 6.5 million people worldwide have been confirmed infected with the coronavirus and more than 386,000 have died, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. The actual number of infections is thought to be much higher, due to limits on testing and many asymptomatic cases.

LONDON (AP) – The British government said Thursday that it will grant hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong residents greater visa rights if China doesn’t scrap a planned new security law for the semi-autonomous territory.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said about 300,000 people in Hong Kong who hold British National (Overseas) passports would be able to stay in Britain for 12 months instead of the current six if China does not rethink its plan. Raab said the length of stay also would be extendable and provide “a pathway” to U.K. citizenship.

When Hong Kong returned to China in 1997 after 150 years as a British colony, its residents were not granted the right to live in the U.K.

China’s proposed national security law aims to reinforce Beijing’s control over Hong Kong in a bid to prevent a return of often-violent protests seen for months last year.

Raab and the foreign ministers of the United States, Canada and Australia said in a joint statement the proposed law “would curtail the Hong Kong people’s liberties, and in doing so, dramatically erode Hong Kong’s autonomy and the system that made it so prosperous.”

BRUSSELS (AP) – Key players and the economies on both sides of the Brexit divide have been hammered by the corona crisis. Yet, even this common enemy is not enough to bring the European Union and Britain closer together in talks about their post-Brexit relationship.

After another week of deeply frustrating talks via video linkup, a chaotic and costly breakup at the end of the year was looming ever larger Friday.

Britain left the EU on Jan. 31, but remains closely aligned with the 27-nation bloc until the end of the year. If no deal on their future relationship is agreed by then, a cliff-edge economic departure would loom again for Britain, with uncertainly over customs rules, airline slots, financial regulation and other standards.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier, who survived a coronavirus infection earlier this year, said Britain refused to allow any leeway to extend a transition period beyond Dec. 31, despite the massive economic problems that the pandemic has thrown up.

“I am worried,” Barnier said after what he described as another week of “disappointing” video negotiations between both sides. The EU has indicated the 27-nation bloc would be willing to extend the transition by up to two years, certainly considering the economic impact of the ongoing health crisis.

Barnier did take time to directly address Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who spent several days in an intensive care unit and is still recovering from COVID-19. “All the best in your recovery, Prime Minister,” he said.

The economic recovery will take longer. According to the International Monetary Fund, the EU’s GDP is set to shrink by 7.1 % over the next year, while the UK is to be hit by a slump of 6.5 %. Bad as it already is, a separation with no deal would only compound the malaise.

Ever since the UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, it has been haggling ever more bitterly with the EU over departure terms. Those simmering sentiments seem to extend now into the negotiations on a new partnership.

In a tight time frame imposed by the UK, both sides now have only months to strike a deal. Similar negotiations between the EU and external trading partners have taken years. And, thanks to the coronavirus, they have do so using video conferencing, which both sides acknowledge is clunky.

“I have to say, objectively, that it is not the same thing,” Barnier said.

Division, though, was easy to pick up in Barnier’s comments after the week of talks.

“I regret the UK refused to engage seriously on a number of fundamental issues,” Barnier said. The UK government said in a statement that “there are significant differences of principle” in several areas.

If Britain is looking for a deal among sovereign equals, Barnier pointed out demographics, the UK’s 66 million versus some 450 million from the 27-nation bloc.

If the EU complained about the UK’s unwillingness to yield on fisheries in what were once common waters, the British government speaks of “the reality that the UK will have the right to control access to its waters at the end of this year.”

Similar disagreements extend to issues ranging from state aid rules to environmental protection and the authority of each other’s courts.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – A United Kingdom maritime organization says a ship reportedly has been boarded by armed men off the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization said in an alert Tuesday night that the vessel “had been boarded by armed men while at anchor” near the strait off the coast of Iran.

The organization offered no further detail. The U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet did not immediately respond to a request for comment. There was no immediate report from Iran on the incident.

Vanessa Hudgens & Ashley Tisdale – Ex’s & Oh’s (Elle King Cover)

[Verse 1]
Well, I had me a boy, turned him into a man
I showed him all the things that he didn’t understand
Whoa, and then I let him go
Now, there’s one in California who’s been cursing my name
Cause I found me a better lover in the UK
Hey, hey, until I made my getaway

[Pre-Chorus 1]
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
Cause I’m the best baby that they never gotta keep
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

[Chorus 1]
Ex’s and the oh, oh, oh’s they haunt me
Like ghosts they want me to make ’em O
They won’t let go
Ex’s and oh’s

[Verse 2]
I had a summer lover down in New Orleans
Kept him warm in the winter, left him frozen in the spring
My, my, how the seasons go by
I get high, and I love to get low
So the hearts keep breaking, and the heads just roll
You know that’s how the story goes

[Pre-Chorus 1]
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
Cause I’m the best baby that they never gotta keep
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

[Chorus 2]
Ex’s and the oh, oh, oh’s they haunt me
Like ghosts they want me to make ’em O
They won’t let go
Ex’s and the oh, oh, oh’s they haunt me
Like ghosts they want me to make ’em O
They won’t let go
Ex’s and oh’s

[Pre-Chorus 2]
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
Climbing over mountains and a-sailing over seas
One, two, three, they gonna run back to me
They always wanna come, but they never wanna leave

[Chorus 2]
My ex’s and the oh, oh, oh’s they haunt me
Like ghosts they want me to make ‘em O
They won’t let go
Ex’s and the oh, oh, oh’s they haunt me
Like ghosts they want me to make ‘em O
They won’t let go
Ex’s and oh’s

Watsky – London Eclipse Lyrics

Come, the moon is over the sun
We’ll use the shadows to run
No one can stop us from leaving
Come, the moon is over the sun
We’ll use the shadows to run
No one can stop us from leaving

Breathing’s boring
What a stupid task it’s
Only 8 a.m. this train’s a moving casket
Brew it black and spike your coffee with your flask
Before you leave the house each day pull on your ‘fuck you’ mask
You know that sad disguise
You know that patch of lies
Commuters pull their papers wide so folks can’t catch their eyes
We let these years of tears build up and now it’s heavy stakes
And we might drown this city if we let these levees break
So I gotta get a grip
Show ‘em I won’t let it slip
I know that what’s done is done and so that’s why it’s dumb to trip
I’m not scratching at the walls, that’s London at my fingertips
They use the news from yesterday to wrap tomorrow’s fish and chips
So you can print me on pretty, colorful paper
Right next to the psycho bitch who allegedly stabbed her neighbor
And I’ll be looking back up atcha until you’re ready to crumple me up
Oh, oh, oh

[Hook]

At the last eclipse, I was living as a single man
My girl’s looking through a pinhole camera
That she made out of a Pringle’s can
Pointed upwards at a gray London sky, pretending she could see the sun (the sun)
And I’m really looking right at her thinking maybe she could be the one
We could run
New York, L.A., UK, what do you say
Got no plans
Got no faith
Another new sun, gonna bring a new day
I wait to queue for the Baker loo, then I take the tube
30 minutes heading to Kent
And I’m coming straight to you with a big bouquet
We’re not anchored
We got our freedom and we can wander any path that we wanna on the planet
Damn it we don’t even need a answer
And I’m looking at all the 9 to 5ers on the train
But all the 9 to 5ers on the train are lookin at your pretty faces
Lookin at the sun that only you can see up in the Evening Standard
This could be home to me
Home could be anywhere
We could be anywhere
We could be free
I’m happy with you
If you were somewhere new
Do you think you still could be happy with me?
Timing is key and our timing was keen
And time is as slow and so why should we baby
You make me weak in the knees
We could move every weekend but only if we can agree to where
Home could be anywhere
We could be anywhere
We could be free
I’m happy with you
If you were somewhere new
Do you think you still could be happy with me?
Timing is key and our timing was keen
And time is as slow and so why should we baby
You make me weak in the knees
We could move every weekend but only if we can agree to where

You need to make that stay in your lane music
Cuh 2016, I’ll be touring Australia
Second time round like

[Pre-Hook: P Money]
I’ve been killing shows with no deal
I always keep it down to earth, I’m so real
I’m ready, I’m itching to go, can’t sit still
They’re so fake, they don’t even know how it feels when you’re

[Hook: P Money]
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, they don’t even know
How it feels when you’re
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, keeping it

[Verse 2: Stormzy]
If you’re gonna send then send for the top
Look, trust me, I get it (calm)
I’ll take that shot and I’ll take that shot
Yeah, I’m photogenic (calm)
But when I spray back and I ended careers
Don’t tell me to dead it (‘llow it)
Bare of these MCs hate me
But they still see me and beg it (pussies)
And I still came back with the game on my lap
Like “nobody move” (no one)
Tryna take care of my Gs
Ain’t tryna see nobody lose
But man try come for my team, I’ll dun him off
My man thought he’s a G, stop running off
I’ve got a crown and you’ve got a crown
But rudeboy, this crown here ain’t coming off (‘llow it)

[Pre-Hook: P Money]
I’ve been killing shows with no deal

Trill, they don’t even know
How it feels when you’re
Trill, keeping it real
Trill, keeping it

[Verse 3: P Money]
Yo, I was one of the youngers that you couldn’t send shop
Yeah, I was a mummy’s boy, but never soft
I boxed man that thought they couldn’t get boxed
Topped MCs that thought they couldn’t be topped
When I flow on the riddim, I never get lost
When you flow on the riddim, you’re told “get lost”
Labels wanna know how I keep going hard
Thought I took a pill cuh my ting never went flop
Complete control, I could never get dropped
There was never a show that never went off
Milking it for so long and it never went off
Don’t know why, maybe it’s cause I never went pop
Helped out the game, man did that a lot
Bring us down to festivals, did that a lot
Man can chat shit about me doing dubstep
Told grime police man never bread cops
So I still spray on dubstep now, and what?
Wait, cut the beat out, let me talk to these lot
Let’s talk P, I’m on about me
First grime act packing at Wireless? Me
Spraying on “Eskimo” at Wireless? Me
Five years straight and still tireless? Me
When everybody got a deal and did what they feel
Who was here releasing grime CDs? Me and Jme
Grime tracks on every single EP? Me
Young MC that was duppying pirate? Me
Big MC still duppying pirate? Me
Doing shows worldwide, play a man’s vocal
Showing their country that it’s not just me
Who was doing that at the time? No one, me
There was more but I can’t fit it in a sixteen
Man just better respect me

[Pre-Hook: P Money]

Hot like the bottom of the pan

Wszędzie i obok
A przecież miłość ma jeden kolor
I chociaż

Są dni w tygodniu nie tego nam trzeba
Żyjemy przyjaźnią męską i kobiecą
Na obrzeżach piekła na krańcach nieba
Uczucia nam kochankom szczególnie się należą

Być może to co śpiewam
Jak lampa Aladyna ożywa
Ożywa taki sens
Jak wiosną zieleń drzew
Satysfakcję sprawia mi
Siódma piętnaście poniedziałek pada deszcz
Piję jogurt toczy się taki sobie dzień
Tutaj i teraz

Miłe nieporozumienia
A przecież miłość ma jeden kolor
I chociaż

Miło jest wieczorową porą zacząć
I skończyć o brzasku pierwszym
Rozmowy w towarzystwie kilku dni nieudanych
I tysiąca dwóch ukrytych w bajce
Jak szpieg pytań unikać
Kto z jasności wyszedł a kto w ciemność wkroczył
Przecież miłość ma jeden kolor
Ty wiesz o tym kiedy hardo patrzę w twoje oczy
Ty wiesz o tym że

Siódma piętnaście poniedziałek pada deszcz
Piję jogurt toczy się taki sam dzień
Wszędzie i obok nieporozumienia
A przecież miłość ma jeden kolor
Każde z nas ukrytą ma puszkę Pandory
I przychodzi taki czas
Kiedy układ gwiazd detonuje złość i gwałt
Wszystko to nic wszystko to nic
Jeden wystrzał nic nie zmieni między nami
Od poniedziałku do niedzieli wszystko będzie takie samo

Wszystko to nic wszystko to nic i chociaż
